Non-Negotiables: Becoming Self-Disciplined

Updated: Aug 14

Introduction

Did you know that the antidote for scatter brain and depressive episodes is structure? As a former grade school educator, I quickly realized the importance of designing a well-structured day for my students. The most challenging classes to instruct were the ones that lacked routine. Having a role assigned to a child makes them feel important, appreciated, and relied on. They understand that if they don't meet the expectations of the role, then it won't get done. This concept doesn't only apply to children, but to human beings in general. We are a species of doers who constantly seek positive reinforcement as a response to something we've accomplished. However, if you're alone, then who will be the delegator of tasks? You must be responsible for applying pressure to yourself when no one's around. Your day should consist of non-negotiables that are intended to lead you to your happier and higher self. Here's a guide towards building a more self-disciplined lifestyle:

Activity 1: Morning Rituals

My morning has to be considered the most important part of my day. The flow of our morning sets the tone; one we should intend to carry forth with intention and positivity. This also calls for an earlier rise, so you can actually gift yourself with a full morning of self-care and preparation activities. Engaging in mindfulness practices such as meditation or journaling can recenter your mental and emotional disposition. Additionally, moving your body can contribute to this as well, considering how long our bodies lay still during the night. Try setting aside at least 30 minutes dedicated to light stretching along with a mild workout session to energize your body. If you're like me and looking to get in a more intense workout every now and then, I'd recommend saving those for later in the day. This is so you can preserve your energy for work or any other low to high-performance activities. Now, one last activity that could bring everything full circle and really solidify that positive and encouraging tone for the day, would be affirmations. Incorporating verbal affirmations and/or goal-setting helps clarify your intentions for the day, the future, and most importantly, yourself.

Activity 2: Nourishing Your Body

I've got to admit, this may be my favorite category. (LOL) I love breakfast. I also know so many people who are not breakfast people at all. However, we have to recognize the significance of a healthy breakfast. Take some time to explore different options that compliment your personal diet and overall preference. (e.g. fruit based, protein packed, liquid based) Also, if your morning routine tends to go a bit longer on time, you can consider some on-the-go items that don't require any preparation. That way, having breakfast won't turn into a task that could potentially slow you down. Another reason why eating a meal in the morning is so important is because it allows you to safely consume any vitamins and/or supplements included in your routine. It's always recommended to line your stomach with some kind of food, even if the directions claim it doesn't require it. Altogether, incorporating vitamins and a decent breakfast into your morning routine can support and regulate your mood and concentration.

What's equally important as a balanced meal, if not more, is drinking water. Stay hydrated queens! This can be such a challenge nowadays, but keeping a reusable water bottle handy is a helpful reminder and preventative measure to avoid dehydration.

Activity 3: Time Management Techniques

This category has become my best friend. I just recently became a more punctual and time-conscious person, but I have not always been. I am notorious for not being on time, but I started to realize how that began affecting me and the people around me. This is when I finally felt triggered enough to change. I'm still not perfect, but the strides that I've made up to this point are admirable, and I'd be gatekeeping if I kept these strategies to myself. So, one method I decided to explore was utilizing productivity apps. These are free applications that literally make my life easier. Why did it take me so long to utilize them to effectively manage my time? I have no idea, but Google Calendar is probably the main one I use on the regular. Especially as I transition out of my career, it's helpful to keep track of upcoming interviews. Some other helpful tools are scheduled reminders, pen-to-paper lists, and digital or physical planners. These are effortless ways to remain organized and accomplish things in a timely manner. I also enjoy being able to see my goals somewhere around me before I go to bed, as well as when I wake up in the morning. So, I decided to invest in a bulletein board with all of my short term goals on it, as well as any future projects or events. A wall calendar would also be a considerable option. Lastly, set specific time blocks for different activities. This will ensure you're not putting too much time into the wrong areas. Time restrictions on social media and TV watching preserves the day's momentum and improves your overall productivity.

Activity 4: Breaks and Self-Care

This may be the most frequently looked over activity, which is why I felt the need to actually consider it as a non-negotiable one. It is a must that we prioritize the need for scheduled breaks during the day. Despite women being the superhumans that we ever so gracefully are, understand how these short breaks can refresh our minds and prevent burnout. This is an area I've found myself struggling with lately, so it felt nice revisiting these principles. Some ideas for a self-care break are taking an outdoor walk, reading a book, or practicing deep breathing exercises. Notice how none of these options included screen time. Staring at a screen is much more exhausting than we realize because it's unfortunately become second nature to us. It's important to relieve ourselves of that as much as possible, especially if you work a job that requires you to do just that. Just remember that if you're not well, none of what you were habitually straining yourself to do will get done. Take care of yourself.

Activity 5: Evening Reflection and Planning

Here lies the most important break of them all. After hours of physical, mental, and emotional activity, know the value of winding down at the end of your day. Consider induldging in quiet activities to transition from the hustle of the day. This may be the one time where I allow myself some occasional screen time while watching a favorite show of mine. But try to refrain from social media being the last thing you see for at least an hour before bed. Instead, reflect on what was accomplished. Try journaling about successes or areas for improvement. This is also a great time to plan for the next day. Set yourself up for success by outlining your goals and tasks to ease into tomorrow.

Conclusion

Reflect on how these 5 passively simple activities can contribute to you having a self-disciplined lifestyle. Committing yourself to these practices can significantly enhance your overall productivity and well-being. For instance, setting specific goals or intentions helps to create a sense of direction and purpose, allowing you to focus your efforts on what truly matters. Incorporating time for mindfulness or meditation can reduce stress and increase mental and emotional clarity, leading to better decision-making throughout the day. Additionally, prioritizing healthy meals and hydration fuels the body and mind, ensuring that you'll have the stamina to tackle any task effectively. Finally, reflecting on the day’s achievements at its conclusion fosters a sense of accomplishment and encourages continuous improvement. There is a level of empowerment that's awaiting your arrival. Once you take control of these daily habits, treating them as non-negotiables, you'll be steps away from residual peace and self-improvement.
